The Fifth Ward community is celebrating its 10th Annual Lyons Avenue Renaissance Festival on Saturday, April 1st, 2023.
The Lyons Avenue Renaissance Festival celebrates the history, art, and culture of Houston's historic 5th Ward. Activities include Houston’s only egg drop by helicopter with over 50,000 goodie-filled, plastic eggs being airdropped mid-festival! Stages will be positioned throughout the festival so that everyone can witness live performers playing authentic blues, hip hop, rock, gospel, and other popular genres. This year's lineup will soon be announced! Some of Houston’s best soul food, Creole cuisine, BBQ and other down-home treats will be available for you to try, and there will also be a variety of unique vendors and service providers lining the streets!
The festival includes a children's area with bouncy houses, music and entertainment for kids of all ages, a community parade and a car show. Over 100 vendors and food trucks will be on hand to sell artisanal goods and delectable southern cooking.
Joetta Stevenson, president of the Greater Fifth Ward Super Neighborhood, will be among those with a table at the festival on Saturday, offering information on community resources and homemade goodie bags. She said her favorite part of attending the festival each year is seeing all the Fifth Ward natives who come home to the neighborhood to celebrate.
"These are folks who might not have been back in Fifth Ward for years or even decades. That's the part that warms my heart, to run across people who haven't been home in a long time," Stevenson said.
The festival, hosted by the Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation and the Fifth Ward Cultural Arts District, takes place from noon to 5 p.m. between the 3800 and 4000 blocks of Lyons Avenue.
